Best Christmas Projector Lights for Walls, Ceilings and Windows

Snowflake projector light on a lawn stake casting falling snowflakes over a decorated house at night

Every December there is a night when the boxes come down from the attic, the ladder comes out of the garage, and somebody asks whether there is an easier way. The best Christmas projector lights give you that easier way: one small light, set on a table, a lawn stake or a nightstand, that fills a whole wall, ceiling or house front with moving snowflakes and holiday scenes in a few minutes. Below, we cover what actually matters when you choose one, then walk through six projectors from our own shop, with who each one suits and where it falls short.

What are Christmas projector lights?

Christmas projector lights are small LED lights that shine a pattern, such as snowflakes, stars or Santa, onto a surface instead of lighting up a strand of bulbs. The light inside passes through a pattern disc or lens, and many models slowly rotate that disc so the picture drifts across the wall or ceiling. You aim the head, plug it in and the decoration appears.

They are not a full replacement for string lights. A projector paints a surface, while strands outline it. Most people use both: strands along the roofline or wrapped around the tree, and a projector to fill the big empty spaces in between. If you are still deciding which strands to buy, our guide to the different types of Christmas lights explains how each style looks once it is up.

How do you choose the best Christmas projector lights?

Start with where the picture will land, then match the projector to that spot. A few features make the biggest difference, and all of them are listed on each product page.

Indoor or outdoor

This is the first filter. An outdoor projector needs a weather rating for the light itself, and you still need to protect the plug and adapter from rain and snow. If a product page lists no outdoor rating, treat it as an indoor light, or keep it under a covered porch. Projectors for bedrooms and living rooms are usually USB powered and much smaller.

Coverage and throw distance

The farther a projector sits from the surface, the bigger and softer the picture gets. Outdoor models are built to cover the front of a house from across the lawn. Indoor ones are made for a ceiling a few feet away. Where a product lists a coverage area or throw distance, we have included it below.

Moving scenes or a still pattern

Rotating patterns feel alive, which is why kids love them. Moving snowflakes look calm and wintry. Bright full-color characters look playful. Think about the mood you want before you pick a pattern set.

Power and placement

Plug-in adapters suit fixed spots like the lawn or a mantel near an outlet. USB power is handy indoors, since you can run a projector from a wall adapter, a laptop or a power bank. Check how it sits, too: a ground stake, a round base, a tilting stand or a bendable neck all change how easy it is to aim.

Each pick below comes from our projector lights collection. All of them use an LED light source.

Dual-head snowflake projector on a lawn stake casting white snowflakes over a decorated house and porch

1. Dual-Head Snowflake Projector Light

Best for: the front of the house, a patio wall or a big open ceiling.

If you only buy one projector for outside, make it the dual-head snowflake projector. It has two heads that each tilt 180°, so you can aim one at the garage and the other at the front door, or cross them over one wall for a thicker snowfall. It shows 4 moving snowflake patterns that fall and rotate, and the product page lists coverage of up to 215 sq ft from up to 32.8 ft away.

The body is IP44 rated ABS and works from -22°F to 122°F, so it can stay out through a cold December. It comes with a round base for a table, a ground stake for the lawn, and it can be mounted on a wall (screws not included). The plug-in adapter has a cord of about 9.8 ft.

Honest limits: the power adapter itself is not weather-rated, so keep it off the ground and covered. It shows snowflakes only, with no Santa or character scenes.

2. Christmas Pattern Projector Light, 16 Patterns

Best for: families who want Santa, reindeer and snowmen, not only snow.

The Christmas pattern projector is the playful one. It comes with 16 patterns, including Santa, Christmas trees, stockings, bells, reindeer, snowmen and the moon, and the projection rotates so the pictures drift across your wall, ceiling or tree. It has an adjustable stand and runs from a US plug, and it is sold as 1, 2 or 4 projectors, which helps if you want to cover a long wall from two angles.

Honest limits: the product page does not list an outdoor rating, so we suggest using it indoors or in a sheltered spot such as a covered porch, and checking the instructions before you leave it out in the weather. The colorful scenes look busy on a small wall; it is happiest on a big, plain surface.

3. Santa's Sky Christmas Projector

Best for: a bedroom or kids' room ceiling at bedtime.

This little white projector slowly rotates a colorful scene of snowmen, snowflakes and reindeer across the walls or ceiling. The projector sits in a separate base, so you can tilt it toward a wall or point it straight up from the nightstand. There is one button, on and off, which makes it easy for kids to use. The Santa's Sky projector is USB powered with a built-in cable and works from a USB adapter, a power bank or a computer. It ships from our US warehouse in about 3–7 business days, which matters when Christmas is close.

Honest limits: a wall adapter is not included, and it needs to stay connected to USB power while it runs. It is an indoor, tabletop light.

4. Starlit Christmas Ceiling Projector

Best for: changing the scene through the season, and holiday party backdrops.

The Starlit ceiling projector is shaped like a little Christmas tree with a flexible gooseneck, so you can bend it toward the ceiling, a wall or a window. It comes with 6 interchangeable Christmas scene discs; swap one in and the show changes. It plugs straight into a USB wall adapter, a power bank or a computer, with no batteries to replace, and weighs about 10.6 oz, so it moves easily from the kids' room to the party table.

Honest limits: the USB wall adapter is not included, and it is meant for indoor use.

5. Gold Star Tree Topper with Snowflake Projector

Best for: making the tree the center of the room.

This one does two jobs. It is a 10 in hollow gold star with a hand-sprayed glitter finish that glows from inside, and it hides a small projector with 4 LEDs and an auto-moving motor, so soft snowflakes drift across the ceiling above the tree. The projector star tree topper covers about 21–53 sq ft of ceiling depending on the distance, runs from an 8 ft lead cord with a plug-in adapter, and arrives in a gift box.

For the best snowfall, keep the star at least 3 ft below the ceiling; the farther away it sits, the wider the snow spreads. Not sure your tree is tall enough to reach that far, or how many strands it needs below the star? Our chart of Christmas lights by tree height helps you plan the rest of the tree.

Honest limits: a little glitter shedding is normal, and like any projector, it should not shine into anyone's eyes.

6. Galaxy Planetarium Projector with 12 Space Discs

Best for: a gift that keeps working long after the tree comes down.

Not every projector under the tree needs to be about Christmas. The galaxy planetarium projector comes with 12 space discs, including the solar system, the Moon, the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy. You twist the focus ring for a sharp image at your distance, the projection light and the side star lights have separate controls, and the auto-off timer helps for falling asleep. It is USB powered and comes in white or black.

Honest limits: there are no Christmas scenes. It is an indoor bedroom light, and you will want to adjust the focus each time you move it.

Where should you aim a Christmas projector?

Aim it at the largest plain, light-colored surface you can find. Pale siding, a white garage door, a smooth ceiling or a cream wall show the clearest picture, while brick, dark paint and busy wallpaper soak up the light.

  • Walls: set the projector low and a few feet back, angled slightly up, so the pattern spreads evenly instead of stretching.
  • Ceilings: a nightstand or dresser works well. The higher the ceiling, the larger and softer the pattern.
  • Windows: projecting through glass weakens the image. For a glowing window seen from the street, hang curtain lights in the window and use the projector on the wall or ceiling inside. Our front porch light ideas show how to pair the two outside.
  • The house front: stake the projector in the lawn far enough back to cover the area you want, and avoid aiming it at the street or a neighbor's windows.

Are Christmas projector lights safe to use?

Yes, when you use them the way the instructions say. A few common-sense habits help:

  • Do not look straight into the lens, and point projectors away from where people sit or walk at eye level.
  • Outdoors, use only outdoor-rated extension cords, keep the adapter and plug connections up off the ground and out of puddles, and do not overload outlets.
  • Unplug the projector before you move it, change a disc or clean the lens.
  • Keep the projector and its cord away from curtains, paper and other flammable materials, and give it some space to stay cool.

FAQ

Do Christmas projector lights work in daylight?

Not really. Projected light is much softer than direct light, so the pattern only shows well once it is dark. Outside, they look best from dusk onward; indoors, turn off the main lights.

Can I leave an outdoor Christmas projector out in the rain?

Only if the light itself has an outdoor rating, like the IP44-rated Dual-Head Snowflake Projector, and even then the adapter and plug need to stay covered and off the ground. If a projector lists no outdoor rating, bring it in or keep it under a roof.

How far away should a projector be from the wall?

It depends on the model. Moving it back makes the picture bigger and softer, and moving it closer makes it smaller and sharper. The Dual-Head Snowflake Projector lists coverage of up to 215 sq ft from up to 32.8 ft away, and the Star Tree Topper works best at least 3 ft below the ceiling.

Can a projector replace Christmas string lights?

It can replace the effort, but not quite the look. A projector covers a large surface fast, while strands outline the roof, railings and tree. Many people use a projector on the walls and keep a few strands on the porch and tree.

Which Christmas projector is best for a kid's bedroom?

The Santa's Sky Christmas Projector and the Starlit Christmas Ceiling Projector are both USB powered and made for indoor use. Santa's Sky has a single on/off button, and Starlit lets kids swap between 6 Christmas scene discs.

Conclusion

The right Christmas projector depends on the surface. For the outside of the house, pick a weather-rated snowflake projector you can stake in the lawn. For a big wall full of Santa and reindeer, choose a multi-pattern projector. For bedrooms and kids' rooms, a small USB projector on the nightstand is easier. Set it up once, aim it well, and you get a whole wall of Christmas without climbing a ladder.
